Quite a few years ago, a young man was camping in the mountains of Montana. He came across someone who appeared to need some help loading his truck. He offered his assistance and the rest is history. This is how two good friends and business partners met and started what we know today as Intermountain Mining, LLC.
Phil Nappo and George Kornec are now on another journey together. They are in the fight of their lives. They are going up against the United States Forestry Service to protect the only life these two men know, and their lively hood. Never did either one of these Military Vets think that they would have to fight the very government they protected many years ago. They always believed that they government would be there for them as they were for it. They were incredibly wrong.
George's family homesteaded the property in question sometime in the 1920's. His dad, Samuel Kornec, moved George and his siblings to the small cabin they called home when George was 4 or 5. His father escaped Russia during the Russian Revolution to live the American dream. Samuel had been a miner his whole life and this seemed to be perfect spot to be able to work for himself rather than for a bigger corporation.
George joined the Air Force at a very early age and then joined the Army for a small bit of time after that. He served his country for 7 years and spent some time in Korea during the war. After his Korean service, he served in a missile deployment of men imbedded secretly into Cuba as a means of deterring missiles bound for the United States, just in case John F. Kennedy's historic stand against the Russian power failed. Not event he military knew of this deployment, so they served as the greatest possible risk. He did this courageously and loyally. He dedicated his only time away from the mine fighting for the government that is now trying to take it away.
Phil also spent some time in the Air Force and he fought in the Vietnam war. He did convoy escort and everything else needed. He is very committed to his veteran brothers and has been devastated by the current situation. He has mentioned several times that he would like to get his old outfit together for a reunion of sorts, but isn't sure how to go about that. He too fought for the very government that is now fighting him.
These two dedicated men are not hobby miners. They have built their entire lives around this property and mining operation. They are committed to "clean mining" and are very specific about the process. The water that is used, is the very water they drink. George jokes that pollutants would have to be added before the city would supply it for the town folk.
When the USFS started this fight, George and Phil did everything they were asked. They still were under the impression that their government would not arbitrarily take their property and they wanted to do the right thing. When that was still not good enough and the government forced them to stop working, thye called for help.
This fight is seemingly impossible for these two men. They are going up against an unlimited supply of resources, manpower and finances. It is equivalent to David and Goliath.
Fred Kelly Grant and Joshua Campbell are the attorneys for this case. They are not going to be satisfied with a settlement, they are going for the win. In order to achieve this, they are going to need some financial help. George and Phil have very limited resources and do not have the money tree that the government has.
